The Roman shield was not only to protect the individual soldier but also to protect the Roman community as a whole. The shield is square so a unit in battle could shield themselves against an enemy without any holes in their defence. Community trust and the ability to protect each other were virtues that made the Roman Empire one of the most successful in world for more than a thousand years. The Roman lions were not to be messed with.
